Killing Your Giants: Lessons from David’s Journey

In the tapestry of biblical tales, David’s journey from an ordinary shepherd boy to a giant killer stands out as an inspiring narrative. In 1 Samuel 17, we witness the unfolding of ordinary steps that propelled David into extraordinary destiny. Beyond the surface of the familiar story, let’s delve into the qualities that transformed David into a giant killer.

GIANT KILLERS ARE SUBMITTED

David’s journey begins with a seemingly mundane task assigned by his father—delivering bread and cheese to his brothers on the battlefield. Despite being anointed as the future King of Israel, David humbly submits to his father’s directive. This act of submission becomes a crucial characteristic of giant killers. The ability to yield to authority, even when possessing great potential, sets the stage for defeating giants.

Giant killers are submitted. You have to get under what God puts over you, or you’ll never be put over what God wanted to put under you!

GIANT KILLERS GET UP

Life often confronts us with trenches of challenges and battles. David’s encounter with Goliath teaches us that giant killers not only face adversity but rise above it. When the enemy strikes, they refuse to remain downcast, realizing that victory comes to those who get up and face their giants.

The enemy will always show up when you’re at your lowest point. But if you get up, you’ll find it’s not as bad as you thought it was.

GIANT KILLERS SHOUT

In the face of adversity, giant killers don’t remain silent. They lift their voices in praise, prayer, and declaration of God’s Word. Shouting becomes a weapon against the perceived enormity of challenges. Through vocal affirmation of God’s promises, giant killers create an atmosphere for victory.

Giant killers praise! Giant killers lift their voices for victory—in their families, for victory in their low places.

GIANT KILLERS FOCUS MORE ON THE REWARD THAN THE RISK

As David faced Goliath, he focused on the reward promised rather than the risk involved. Giant killers understand the power of fixation on the ultimate goal rather than the challenges on the way. Whether it’s familial, personal, or spiritual battles, keeping eyes on the reward empowers giant killers to press on.

Get your eyes off the risk and onto the reward. There’s something greater than Heaven and something worse than Hell—getting to Heaven and seeing my family there is better than just going to Heaven alone.

GIANT KILLERS HAVE TO BE THEMSELVES

David’s rejection of Saul’s armor symbolizes the uniqueness of giant killers. They embrace their individuality and the specific gifts God has bestowed upon them. Giant killers understand that authenticity is a crucial component of their effectiveness.

I can’t be you – I have to be me. God will anoint you to be you – not a fake you.

GIANT KILLERS ARE DETERMINED

Determination marks the path of giant killers. Like David, who chose five stones instead of an army’s worth, they persist until victory is achieved. Giant killers understand that setbacks are opportunities for comebacks, and they press on with unwavering resolve.

If I miss one, I’ve got more. If prayer doesn’t take the enemy down, I’ve got prayer and fasting.

The story of David and Goliath transcends its biblical origins, offering timeless principles for overcoming life’s giants. As we navigate our battles, let’s embody the qualities of submission, resilience, vocal affirmation, focus on rewards, authenticity, and unyielding determination. In doing so, we position ourselves not just to confront giants but to triumph over them, echoing the resounding victory of David in the face of adversity.
