What to Do When You’re Waiting on God but Nothing Is Happening

“What do I do when I’m praying, but nothing’s happening?”

It’s a question many Christians wrestle with – stuck somewhere between trust and frustration, hoping for direction, clarity, or a breakthrough.

What we often overlook in moments like these is that the act of simply making a decision – even a small one – can be an important part of how God works in our lives.

Choosing to take a step forward, even when we feel uncertain, is one of the ways we reflect God’s image.

He created us with the ability to move, respond, and create – not just to sit still and wait for everything to make sense. Yet, that’s where we often get stuck.

We sense there’s a better version of ourselves that we’re meant to become – but we can’t seem to get there.

Life feels stalled. We pray. We wait. We try to stay hopeful. And still – nothing seems to change.

Why?

The Trap of Waiting

Sometimes the problem isn’t that God is late – it’s just that we haven’t moved. We think we’re waiting on God – when in reality – He might be waiting on us.

This misunderstanding can happen when we treat faith like a “superstition” – looking for signs, seeking perfect clarity, or waiting for a divine “push.” But faith often works the other way around. It requires us to move first. To trust before we can see. To take action – even when we’re not totally sure how it’ll turn out.

A Story That Breaks the Pattern

There’s a scene in 1 Samuel 14 that illustrates this perfectly.

Saul and his army are sitting under a pomegranate tree. No movement. No progress. Just waiting. But Saul’s son, Jonathan, decides to do something. He turns to his armor-bearer and says to him: “Come, let’s go.”

That phrase – “Let’s go” – is simple but powerful.

Jonathan didn’t have all the answers. He didn’t even tell his father. He just saw an opportunity, felt the urge to move, and went.

The path ahead wasn’t easy. There were cliffs on both sides and danger ahead. But Jonathan chose to act. And in doing so, he stepped into a story God was already writing.

When Faith Looks Like Motion

How many of us are paralyzed by options?

Not because we don’t have enough choices – but because we have too many. We overanalyze. We fear getting it wrong. So we end up doing nothing.

But faith doesn’t require perfect clarity. It just requires movement. You don’t need to have your whole life mapped out – maybe you just need to take that next step.

Call someone. Apply. Ask. Move. Serve. Try. Begin.

Many times God does His clearest guiding after we’ve started walking.

You’re Not Alone in the Tension

If you’ve ever felt like God is taking too long to answer you – you’re not alone. Many people feel like they’re running out of time while God seems to be taking His time.

But this gap is where trust grows, where courage forms, and where real faith is born.

God isn’t slow. He’s strategic. And sometimes, He’s waiting for us to say what Jonathan did: “Come, let’s go.”

So if you’re stuck, discouraged, or unsure what to do next – maybe the most spiritual thing you can do right now is to just do something.

You don’t need a dramatic plan. You don’t need a “lightning-bolt” from heaven. Maybe you just need one faithful step.

Because more often than we realize, the miracle follows the movement.

And who knows? Maybe that small step forward – the email you’re wanting to send, the call you’re wanting to make, or the risk you’re wanting to take – could be the very thing that activates something far bigger than you imagined.

So don’t wait for everything to make sense. Don’t wait for all the lights to turn green. Just start walking! As Jonathan said:

“Come, let’s go.”
