Jesus’ Teachings on Treasures: Finding Joy in Generous Living
How we learn about money starts at home. From a young age, we watch our parents and pick up on their habits. Are they generous tippers, or careful savers? Do they argue over money, or show gratitude through giving? Do they stick to a budget? These everyday moments shape how we approach finances as we grow up.
As we get older, we’re also influenced by cultural voices and financial “experts” of the day. Maybe we’ve read books by popular authors, or watched financial advice on YouTube. But for followers of Christ, the ultimate financial expert is Jesus. His teachings on money, treasure, and generosity, are timeless and transcend any current “wisdom of the day.”
In Acts 20:35, Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
While receiving feels good, the act of giving holds a unique kind of joy and fulfillment. Let’s dive into why Jesus emphasized generosity and how it can transform the way we live.
Treasures: The Heart of the Matter
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus teaches:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
This verse is powerful. What we value, or “treasure,” shapes who we are and how we live. Everyone has treasures – things we care about, protect, or hold close. It could be money, relationships, or even goals.
Treasuring isn’t inherently bad – it’s a part of being human. However, Jesus warns us to be cautious about what we treasure – because what we treasure determines our focus and our future.
Think of your life as a bag you fill over time. Not everything we pack in that bag is worth holding onto. Earthly treasures, like money, possessions, and achievements, don’t last. They wear out, get lost, or fade away. But heavenly treasures, the kind that impact eternity – are long lasting. They carry significance far beyond our short lives here on earth, extending into what author Randy Alcorn calls the “line of eternity.”
Why Giving Is More Blessed
Jesus’ assertion that giving is more blessed than receiving isn’t just a moral obligation, it’s the smartest way to live. Generosity reorients our hearts toward what truly matters. Here are five reasons why giving transforms our lives:
- It Aligns Our Priorities
Giving shifts us away from self-centered thinking. When we give, we recognize that life isn’t about accumulating for ourselves, but using our resources and talents to make a difference for others. - It Frees Us from Anxiety
Holding tightly to possessions breeds fear – fear of loss, theft, or decline. Generosity, on the other hand, cultivates trust in God’s provision and a sense of freedom. - It Reflects God’s Love
Loving someone means valuing what they value. God treasures people, and when we invest in other people – through acts of kindness, support for the poor, or building His kingdom – we align our hearts to His. - It Shapes Who We Become
The things we treasure mold our character. If we treasure wealth, we risk becoming greedy. If we treasure approval, we may become people-pleasers. But if we treasure God’s kingdom, we grow in love, humility, and faith. - It Stores Up Eternal Rewards
Generosity isn’t just about the present, it’s an investment in eternity. As Randy Alcorn wrote in The Treasure Principle, life on earth is a brief dot compared to the infinite line of eternity. Jesus invites us to live for the line of eternity, rather than the dot of this fleeting life.
Practical Steps Toward Generosity
If you’re new to giving, start small. The biggest hurdle for many is the belief that they can’t afford to give. Interestingly, it’s often those with less who feel freer to give, while those with more, struggle under the weight of accumulating wealth.
The antidote? Trust in God. Begin by giving what you can and watch as generosity reshapes your heart and your finances.
For those who already give, consider taking that next step. Maybe it’s committing to a tithe, sacrificing a luxury to give more, or supporting a cause close to God’s heart. Every act of generosity deepens your connection to God and aligns your treasures with His purpose.
Living for the Line
Jesus’ teaching compels us to ask: Are we living for the dot or the line? Are we investing in things that will vanish, or treasures that will endure forever?
Imagine knowing a currency was about to lose its value forever. Clinging to it would be pointless. That’s what it’s like to invest only in earthly treasures. Jesus invites us to invest in something permanent: His eternal kingdom.
Generosity shouldn’t feel like a burden. Instead, it should bring joy – the joy of knowing you’re making an eternal impact, the joy of seeing lives changed through your giving, and the joy in trusting Jesus – the smartest financial advisor who’s ever lived.
So, what’s in your bag? Are you filling it with things that fade away, or treasures that will last forever? As you consider this, remember Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
