Christian Guide to Managing Stress: 6 Biblical Tips That Work
Life can be a lot.
Whether it’s job pressure, financial strain, health challenges, relationship tension, or just the weight of uncertainty, many of us are walking through life feeling worn out. But God never intended for us to carry life’s burdens alone.
In fact, 1 Peter 5:7 states, “Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.”
At Summit Church San Antonio, we believe that Scripture isn’t just for Sunday mornings – it’s a guide for everyday life. Here are six practical, and Biblical, ways to manage stress and lighten your load – no matter what season of life you’re in.
1. Don’t Be a Mountain-Maker
Mark 11:23 reminds us that with faith, we can move mountains. But here’s the catch: we can’t be in the business of making mountains and then expect God to move them for us.
A lot of stress is self-inflicted. We exaggerate our problems, assume the worst, and mentally spiral – until small issues feel overwhelming. Social media, news headlines, and endless commentary, don’t help either – they amplify our fear and fuel our anxiety.
Faith doesn’t ignore problems, but it doesn’t magnify them either. So instead of feeding your stress, starve it. Focus on God’s power and Word, not the size of your struggle.
2. Learn to Enjoy the Ride
Paul once said, “I’ve finished the race – with joy.” Joy is more than a feeling – it’s a posture of the heart. And it should set believers apart from the rest of the world.
Studies show that the average child laughs over 500 times a day, while the average adult laughs only 17 times a day (some of us aren’t even hitting that number)!
Jesus tells us to approach life like a child – not naive – but curious, joyful, and present. Life moves fast. Don’t miss the beauty of the moment because you’re too focused on the destination. Schedule fun. Make time for laughter. Let joy be your strength.
3. Pray More Than You Talk
1 Thessalonians 5:17 states: “Pray without ceasing.” And Philippians 4:6 reminds us to be anxious about nothing – but in everything, to pray.
It’s tempting to vent or spiral when stress hits. But prayer is where perspective and peace is found. Before you blast your frustration on others, take it to God.
Studies – even from secular institutions – demonstrate that prayer reduces stress hormones and improves mental clarity. So the next time you’re overwhelmed, don’t just talk about it. Talk to Him.
4. Choose a Song and Sing It
Isaiah 54:1 says, “Sing, O barren…” God wasn’t telling the joyful to sing, but rather He was calling the discouraged, the empty, and the struggling, to lift their voices.
Music shapes our mood. That’s why stores play music overhead that keeps us shopping longer. Likewise, your spirit needs the right soundtrack. Worship isn’t just for Sunday – it’s fuel for Monday, too.
So pick a song that reminds you of God’s goodness and make it your anthem for the week. When stress rises, so should your praise to the Lord.
5. Don’t Let Life’s Puzzles Steal Your Faith
There will always be unanswered questions – “Why did this happen?” or “Why didn’t that work out?” We won’t have every answer on this side of heaven.
But faith doesn’t require full understanding. It only requires trust. As believers, we anchor our lives in what we do know: there is a God, He loves us, and He’s for us.
Don’t let what you don’t know, rob you of what you do know.
6. Know Which Balls Bounce
You can’t juggle everything – and that’s okay. Life throws both “glass balls” and “rubber balls” at us. The glass balls are your faith, family, and health – drop them, and they can shatter. But the rubber balls? Deadlines, social events, inboxes – they’ll bounce.
Not every task holds the same weight. Don’t burn out trying to keep everything in the air. Prioritize what matters most.
Final Thoughts
Life comes with its own set of challenges in every season. But with God, we don’t have to face them alone. He invites us to cast our cares on Him, find joy in the journey, pray continually, worship freely, and to trust Him fully. Stress may come – but God offers us peace that surpasses all understanding.
